[ASSIM BEY
(Mustafa, Turkish Diplomat and Foreign Minister)] Manuscript Document, in Danish with translation,
signed by Count Frederik Wilhelm Sponneck, (1842-1921), Danish Ambassador in Stockholm, (1897-1912), to the Customs Authorities in Denmark, requesting them “to allow the wife of the Turkish Minister here, Madame Assim Bey, who will shortly be travelling to the Continent via Denmark, all the relief at the Customs compatible with the rules in force”, 1 side folio, Danish Embassy, Stockholm, 5th December [Signed] 1909 Assim Bey was appointed Ambassador to Sweden by the ‘Young Turk’ government following the revolution of 24th July 1908. He had long been known for his belief in the necessity of reform. In 1910 he was transferred to the sensitive post at Sofia, accredited to the new independent kingdom of Bulgaria, and, on the strength of his experience there, made Foreign Minister in 1911.
