BEATRICE
(Mary Victoria Feodore, 1857-1944, Princess, Daughter & Companion of Queen Victoria) End of an autograph letter signed 'Beatrice'
to Sir Theodore Martin, (1816-1909, K.G.B.), biographer (1874-1880) of Prince Albert and friend of Queen Victoria, reading “... after a very tiresome indisposition” followed by the subscription, with the autograph envelope front, 4½” x 4” and 3” x 4”, no place, no date, circa 1883, Curiously, the “1d penny red” stamp, imperforate on bluish paper, is of the type first issued in 1841 and discontinued about the time the Princess was born. It is an early issue (no plate mark, GH in corners), and the cancellation ([London] ‘26’) does not extend to the paper, as it should. The two items appear to have been in water, and the stamp substituted.
