ANDREI VLADIMIROVICH

(Grand Duke, 1879-1956, Russian Major-General, Grandson of Tsar Alexander II, Cousin of Nicholas II) Autograph letter signed to his nephew Slava Astafiev (d.1976) and Slava's wife Margot (d. 1976),

in Russian with translation, thanking them “with all my heart ... for your dear letter and for yoursympathy in my very great grief” at the loss of his brother  Kirill Vladimirovich , 1876-1938, head of the Imperial House of Russia, who had died on 13th October, “You have touched me very much”, 1 side 8vo. black edged and conjugate blank, 10 Villa Molitor, Paris XVI, 14th October 1938, Andrei Vladimirovich married the great Russian ballerina Matilda Kschessinska, 1872-1971, in 1921, who had been for a while in 1892 the mistress of Nicholas II. Slava was the son of her brother, the actor Joseph Kschessinsky, 1868-1942, who stayed in Russia. Slava’s mother was another famous ballerina, Serafima Alexandrovna Astafieva, 1876-1934. She opened her school at 152 Kings Road, Chelsea, in 1916, and her son married Margot Luck, one of her pupils.
