(John Murray, 1755-1830, F.R.S., 4th Duke) Commission Document on vellum, signed 'Atholl Lieut.',
with his armorial seal, to James Hay of Seggieden (1777-1838), appointing him under the King’s Warrant of 22nd May 1804, “Captain of a Troop in the Perthshire Gentlemen and Yeomanry Cavalry but not to take rank in the Army unless serving the time of the said Corps being called out into actual Service”, as indeed many militia men were, his seniority to date from 1st August 1803, “duly to exercise as well the Officers as Soldiers thereof in Arms and ... to keep them in good order and discipline, who are hereby commanded in His Majesty’s name to obey you as their Captain”, Hay is to follow orders “received from time to time from His Majesty, from ... Thomas Robert Earl of Kinnoull your Lieutenant Colonel Commandant, or any other your Superior Officer, according to the rules and discipline of War”, 12” x 16”, no place, 22nd August 1804 The Duke was Lord Lieutenant from 1794, and Colonel of the Perthshire Militia from 1798. James Hay’s grandchild and eventual heiress married a grandson of the Duke’s.
