(Sir David, 1757-1829, 1st Bart., General, Hero of Seringapatam, 1799) Autograph letter signed to John Spottiswoode of Spottiswoode, Berwickshire,
thanking him for his letter of the 21st, which enclosed the one “from Mr. Douglas your relation ...I will write to Sir H[enry] Torrens”, 1779-1828, “and request that Mr. D may be allowed to purchase an Ens[eign]cy ... but my hopes are not great as there are so few opportunities and so many candidates”, he is sorry that Spottiswoode is “going to London without fulfilling your promise ... to visit this season Lady B: reminded Mrs. S: ... in her letter a few weeks ago” but Mrs. Spottiswoode “took no notice of this part of the letter”, he adds their regards and says “My Bath has restored me to perfect health”, with a P.S. “Mr. Douglas is rather late in beginning”, 3 sides 4to., addressed to Sackville Street, London on 4th side, Fern Tower, by Perth, 25th November 1819, Sir David held many important commands in the Cape and in India, and led the Indian force in the expedition of 1801-1802 that recovered Egypt from the French. Back in India in 1802 he was made head of the North Madras army, but resigned and went home when it was clear that Sir Arthur Wellesley would be in charge of the operations against the Mahrattas. However, he went out to recover the Cape, 1805, was Moore’s second-in-command in Spain, 1808, and during the peace was made Commander-in-Chief, Ireland in 1820. Torrens was military secretary to Wellington in the Peninsular and was made Adjutant-General to the Forces in 1820.
