AUBER
(Daniel François Esprit, 1782-1871, French Operatic Composer, Father of French Opera) Autograph letter in French with translation, signed to Alphonse Leduc,
(1804-1868, founder of the Parisian music publishing firm), saying “if you could give me two more places in the third box , you would give me great pleasure”, addressee’s name on conjugate leaf, engraved address in heading, 1 side 8vo., Royal Conservatoire of Music and Declamation, Friday 29th July n.y., [probably] 1842 Auber began a long association with the librettist Eugène Scribe, 1791-1861, in 1822. Their ‘Masaniello’ of 1828 was a European favourite, and its duet ‘Amour sacré de la patrie’, sung by Nourrit at Brussels in 1830, became the signal for the revolution that separated modern Belgium from the Netherlands. The same year Auber became Louis Philippe’s director of court concerts, and in 1842 succeeded his old master Cherubini at the Conservatoire. Napoleon III made him Imperial Mâitre de Chapelle in 1857.
