ACLAND

(Sir Richard Thomas Dyke, 1906-1990, 15th Bart, M.P.) Typed Letter Signed to Dr. Maurice Ernest,

(1872-1955), asking if he wants “to give me candid constructive comments ... or to give yourself the pleasure of telling me for an hour or so what you think of me for daring to attack darling Mr. Chamberlain ... In the ordinary way nothing would have given me more pleasure than to sit down with an opponent ... and spend an hour mashing up his arguments. With a lunch thrown in the thing would have been paradise. But ... the amount of work involved in keeping up with the reactions to this book is so great” that he needs assuring that it is “for the first and not the second of the two purposes. Yours very sincerely”, with very interesting newspaper cuttings (1948) about Sir Richard on verso, 1 side 4to., 30 St Leonards Terrace, S.W.3 (replacing Killerton, Exeter), 18th February 1940, Sir Richard entered Parliament as a Liberal, 1931, but resigned in 1942 to found, with J.B. Priestley, the Commonwealth Party, and gave away his Devon family estate to the National Trust. He became a Labour M.P. in 1945 but resigned in 1955 over Labour’s nuclear defence policy. His books include ‘Unser Kampf’ (1940) and ‘Waging Peace’ (1958). Dr. Ernest (formerly Ernst) was London correspondent of the ‘Wiener Tagblatt’ before the first World War. Although he gave up journalism in 1909 to return to medicine and the promotion of longevity, he took an intense interest all his life in Austrian and German relations with Great Britain.
