thanking her “and Mr Gibbs of all my heart for the words of sympathy and christian consolation ... my poor wife joining ... likewise”, hoping “your husband will soon recover from his lameness ... my best compliments to your dear little girls ... with faithful affection & respect”, 2 sides black-edged, Berlin, 31st October 1860 Their only child Adalbert, b. 1841, had died in August at Khartoum. The Prince’s morganatic wife, Theresia Essler (1808-1878), was the sister of the celebrated dancer Fanny, and daughter of Haydn’s valet and secretary Johann Florian Essler.
