ALEXANDER III

(1845-1894, Emperor of Russia from 1881) Charming cup & saucer from the Imperial Porcelain factory,

in St Petersburg, with their mark underneath, decorated in gold, red and black in imitation of the syle of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with gold lustre inside, the cup 1½” high by 2½” across, the saucer ¾” high and 4” across, St Petersburg, c. 1890 Made for the private use of the Imperial Family at Gatchina and a remarkable survival from the Revolution. This design was a particular favourite of the Emperor and his Empress. Alexander III succeeded his father after his assassination in 1881. In 1866 he married Princess  Marie Dagmar  (1847-1928), sister of  Queen Alexandra  of Britain, who became known as Maria Feodorovna.
