ARNOLD
(Matthew, 1822-1888, Poet) Fine Autograph Letter Signed to My dear Hornby,
telling him that he has now “arranged matters and can have to great pleasure of being at home to receive you ... on Tuesday the 16th ... and remember, to keep you up to the mark, that if you do not come, I have changed a date of inspection in vain ...”, 1 side 8vo., Harrow, 10th March n.y., c. 1870, Arnold was appointed to the inspectorate of schools in 1851, through the patronage of Lord Lansdowne. The recipient could be James John Hornby, (1826-1909, Headmaster of Eton from 1868) who he would probably have known from his work, particularly as from 1861 there was a royal commission inquiring into the administration of the great public schools of England with special reference to Eton College.
