ALBRECHT

(Duke of Bavaria, 1584-1666, Younger Brother of Elector Maximilian I, 1573-1651, Ruler of Bavaria from 1597) Letter signed 'Alberto Duca di Baviera' in Italian with translation, to  Gaspar MATTEI , Papal Nuncio to the Holy Roman Emperor 1639-1643, and titular Archbishop of Athens, at Ratisbon (Regensburg),

saying that since “By your Illustrious Lordship’s toil, diligence and authority, the process of theCoadjutor Bishopric of Freising, (for which I, and the Prince my son”, ( Albrecht Sigmund , d.1685), “offer our repeated thanks), has been completed so that all that remains is to send it to Rome”, the writer “would like to accompany ... the process with a letter of warm recommendation, of such kind as you will judge may be profitable and necessary ... to complete what you are doing in the same sincere spirit which Your Illustrious Lordship has shown me in this matter”, which will “increase my obligation, and of all this House, to repay you with the same promptness”, 1 side folio, address and papered seal with arms of Bavaria and part of additional small wax seal, Munich, 12th July 1640 Normally the Nuncio was accredited to the Emperor at Vienna, but the Imperial Diet was sitting at Ratisbon seeking a peace settlement between the warring states of Germany. The Emperor in fact prolonged the war till 1648, refusing to have any Protestants in his dominions. Albrecht must have approached the Nuncio on behalf of his son soon after the Nuncio’s appointment in August 1639. Freising was the ancient bishopric that included Munich and was often held by members of the Wittelsbach family. Albrecht obtained the full bishopric in 1652, and retained it when he obtained Ratisbon as well in 1668 till he died. The magnificent portal as Freising is due to him.
