ALBRECHT

(Duke of Bavaria, 1584-1666, Younger Brother of Elector Maximilian I, 1573-1651, Ruler of Bavaria from 1597) Letter signed 'Affttmo. per servirla Alberto Duca di Baviera' in Italian with translation, to  Gaspar MATTEI ,

Papal Nuncio to the Holy Roman Emperor 1639-1643, and titular Archbishop of Athens, at Vienna, telling him that he has “just been advised from Rome that the processes drawn up in the past to obtain the Coadjutor Bishopric of Freising for my son Prince Albrecht Sigmund”, (d. 1685), “have unfortunately gone astray ... begging you most urgently to be so kind as to repeat the favour of drawing up a new original copy of the process of the life and character of the said prince, without which it is impossible to complete the dispatch of the Coadjutorship”, relying on “the humanity of Your Illustrious Lordship, I undertake, as does the Prince ... duly to gratify your wishes in return as occasions may arise” and referring the Nuncio “to Doctor Stikel, Agent of the Elector my brother in this court”, 1 side folio, address and papered seal with excellent impression of arms of Bavaria on conjugate leaf, Munich, 12th July 1641, Albrecht must have approached the Nuncio on behalf of his son soon after the Nuncio’s appointment in August 1639, and the process had already been sent to Rome once in 1640. Freising was the ancient bishopric that included Munich and was often held at this time by members of the Wittelsbach family. The Prince succeeded to the full bishopric in 1652 and continued to hold it when apointed also to Ratisbon in 1668 till he died. The magnificent portal at Freising is due to him.
