(BRYDGES, Sir Samuel Edgerton & the Rev. Stebbing Shaw).

THE TOPOGRAPHER, containing a Variety of original Articles, illustrative of the Local History and Antiquities of England. Embellished with Forty Two Engravings.

London. J. Robson, J. Walker, & C. Stakker. 1791. 2 parts bound together. Part I - pp. 15 unnumbered. 31 plates. Part II - pp. i, 1 - 328, 331 - 362, (vii) of indexes and Directions to the Binder. 11 plates. 4to. Modern cloth. The missing leaf (pp329/330) is the fly title for the June 1791 issue. The Topographer was published between 1789 & 1791 as a monthly publication. The first three volumes were 8vo in size. The Editors worked off 100 copies of the 4th volume in 4to with the hope of reprinting the earlier volumes in that size but found that that was not financially viable and so to quote the Preface “In order therfore to render what was already printed as complete as it was in their power, they have had all the plates (with two or three exceptions for obvious reasons) of the former volumes worked off, and added to them as many pages, as were necessary to their illustration. They trust that the whole together, which consists of 42 plates, and more than 400 pages, will be thought to make a volume complete in itself, and to many much more desirable than the octavo edition.” The 1st part is as described above and the 2nd is the 6 issues for the first six months of 1791. Of this edition only 100 copies were printed and there were no further issues of The Topographer.
