BELL, Douglas.

DRAKE.

London : Gerald Duckworth & Co. Ltd., 1935. First edition. Great Lives Series. 144pp.Small 8vo. Brief bibliography. A very good copy in the dustwrapper with a signed presentation inscription from the author on the front endpaper 'To my friend Louisa M. Sieveking.'. A short biography of Sir Francis Drake ( 1540 - 1596 ) , hero of the defeat of the Spanish Armada of 1588. Unhappily, after this triumph his career went downhill, though, in the final analysis, his achievements as a seafarer must be accounted astonishing and singularly significant.
