DIXON (William Hepworth):

WHITE CONQUEST.

London: Chatto & Windus 1876. First edition: secondary issue, with adverts dated 1877. The English journalist W.H.Dixon (1821-1879) surveys the melting pot of North America in the 1870s. Chapters on San Francisco, Texas, etc. If one can ignore the overtly racist overtones, the book is full of anecdote and observation not to be found elsewhere, with fascinating material on Indian tribes, slaves and ex-slaves, carpet-baggers, Chinese immigrants, and a great deal else. Two volumes. Demy 8vo. viii,356,32;vi(376)pp. Original cloth; very slightly rubbed; some spotting, light creasing, a few minor nicks and flaws; a little shaken and cracked; but a good set.
