BACON (George Washington):

BACON'S POPULAR ATLAS OF THE WORLD ...

London: G.W.Bacon & Co. 1899. An interesting and handsome late Victorian world atlas, with fifty coloured maps, mainly double-page, as well as pages of flags and diagrams. The maps include 100 separate insets of the major ports, etc. Bacon draws particular attention to various new features of the atlas - newly engraved maps of the colonies, the inclusion of many of the smaller ports, his "patent thumb index, invented specially for this work", the statistical diagrams of population figures, and a special gazetteer giving descriptions of the principal towns and cities. Elephant 4to. Original decorative cloth; all edges gilt; a little very minor wear, a few slight marks and nicks, one map slightly grazed, one index leaf slightly frayed, a little shaken, but a very good copy.
