DOYLE (Richard):

A JOURNAL KEPT BY RICHARD DOYLE IN THE YEAR 1840: ILLUSTRATED WITH SEVERAL HUNDRED SKETCHES BY THE AUTHOR.

London: Smith, Elder & Co. 1885. First edition. A well-produced memorial facsimile of a heavily illustrated and artistically precocious journal kept by Richard Doyle at the age of fifteen. Doyle (1824-1883) went on to work with John Leech, to illustrate Dickens, Ruskin and Thackeray, and to become one of the finest illustrators of that or any other period. His cover-design for "Punch" remained in use until 1954. Introduction by J. Hungerford Pollen. Demy 4to. Original pictorial cloth gilt; all edges gilt; a little rubbed; lower cover a little marked; a few slight nicks, chips and small flaws, but a nice copy.
