BALSTON, Thomas, 1883-1967 :

WILLIAM BALSTON : PAPER MAKER 1759-1849.

London : Methuen & Co., 1954. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed to the novelist V. S. Pritchett by the author "To Victor Pritchett, my best book. A fine biography of James Whatman's successor, William Balston (1759-1849), whose founding of the Springfield Mill in 1806 propelled the Whatman brand-name to the supremacy it always enjoyed for hand-made white papers. Illustrations (including illustrations of historic countermarks and watermarks). Printed on superb hand-made Whatman paper by W.& R.Balston. A fine, bright and clean copy in a slightly dusty and very slightly nicked dust-jacket. With the V.S.Pritchett library dispersal label.
