Macmillan. London. 1920 1st edition. 216 x 140mm. ppxii,340 + 46 plates & 2 maps (1 folding, in pocket). Spine a little rubbed and dull. A very good copy indeed otherwise with the red inset calligraphic label on the upper board. This copy is inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to his Aunt (Gertrude), and dated 26.II.20. The first part of this book, describing the 9 months journey of she and her brother, is by Ella Sykes. Percy Sykes describes her in the Preface as ``being the first Englishwoman to cross the dangerous passes leading to and from the Pamirs and, with the exception of Mrs. Littledale, to visit Khotan.'' He further states that ``as far as possible the subjects so ably and exhaustively dealt with by Sir Aurel Stein have been avoided.''
