[ZANOTTI, Eustachio.] [PALCANI-CACCIANEMICI, Luigi.]
De vita Eustachii Zanotti comentarius.
Bologna, ex typographia Instituti Scientiarum, [January 1784]. 8vo, pp. 38, [2], with engraved frontispiece depicting reverse and obverse of a medal struck in honour of Zanotti, title-page with engraved vignette illustrating an ancient vase and engraved tail-piece of an other ancient vase at end; some scattered foxing but a very good copy in contemporary carta rustica. Rare first edition of the earliest biography of the Bolognese astronomer Eustachio Zanotti (1709-1782), written by his collaborator and principal biographer Luigi Palcani-Caccianemici. Zanotti succeeded Manfredi at the Bologna observatory in 1739 and stayed there for the next forty years transforming it into 'one of the finest observatories in Europe' (DSB). He published extensively in the field of astronomy but also wrote a Trattato teoretico-pratico di prospettiva (1766), which was intended for painters as well as mathematicians. No copies in RLIN or OCLC; DSB, XIV, pp. 589/90 (erroneously dates the work '1782', but the imprimatur is dated '2nd Januar 1784')
