ZASCHE, Ivan.

Park Jurjavés. Ansicht der Metropoltankirche und Erzbischöflichen Residenz von Agram in Croatien.

Vienna, Carl Gerold & Sohn, 1853. Oblong folio, pp. 10, pictorial litho title and 11 tinted litho plates, with a large folding plan loosely inserted. very slight soiling on extreme outer margins but a fine large set in original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on the upper cover, later cloth spine. The park of Jurjaves or Jurjevac was named after its creator Bishop Juraj Haulik, later Archbishop, and situated outside Zagreb in Croatia. It covered over 700 acres. The introduction to this Album extols the'great variety of the landscape and plants and arrangement...we find charming meadows, shady forest paths, fresh valleys and dark gorges, distant views stretch before our eyes without even a suggestion that there is a great mountain nearby...the whole visible horizon seems like an endless English park'.The work was begun under the direction of Michael Sebastian Riedl in the early 1840s, with the felling of tracts of forest to create meadows with groves of trees. Two lakes were joined by a cascade, and the Belvedere, Summer House, Swiss Chalet and other pavilions were designed and built by Franz Schucht. Adjoining the park was a model farm with modern industrial workshops for agriculture and forestry. The park was later named Maksimir in honour of Haulik's predecessor Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. The fine plates are from the oil paintings and watercolours prepared for Bishop Haulik by the Bohemian artist Ivan Zasche.Dochnahl, Bibliotheca Hortensis, 1861, p.80 .Olga Marusevski, Gardens and Parks; Bidermeier in Croatia, Museum of Arts and Crafts, Zagreb, n.d.
