Elevation of a country villa for Count Francesco Riccardi Vernaccia.

[Florence, c. 1795]. Folio sheet, 460 x 565 mm. Pen and ink with watercolour wash, inscribed 'Prospetto per una Villetta all' impareggiabile merito dell' Illmo. Sig. Francesco Riccardi Vernaccia Cave[aliere] di S. Stefano'. Design for a three storey country villa outside Florence, with an unusual pedimented front with statues in embrasures, a clocktower, and a bell on top. The ornate ironwork balcony seems to have been an afterthought.The design was commissioned by Francesco Riccardi Vernaccia, son of Francesco Riccardi who in 1794 had inherited through his wife the fine early 18th century Villa di Cintoia in the Chianti hills in the valley of the river Erma near the old road from Florence to Rome. The Villa di Cintoia, still standing and now available for holiday lets (sleeps eleven), and the design presented here to the young master show many similarities.
