First edition. Mauduit (1778-1854), a French architect who had spent 15 years in the service of Czar Alexander I, had used a period of leave from the Russian court by travelling extensively in Greece, the Crimea and Italy (1811-12). In Greece he spent a considerable time investigating a possible site for the city of Troy, he even came across what he supposed to be the remains of the walls of the Homeric city. When announcing his discovries in Paris, they fell on deaf ears and scholars took little notice. Mauduit was only able to publish his findings once he had retired from his Russian employment and had vacated his post at the French Academy in Rome. In his book Mauduit does not disguise his frustration at being neglected and attacks the views of established scholars such as Raoul-Rochette.
