SCHLAEGER, Julius Carolus.

Commentatio de nummo Alexandri magni cum summa raritate tum typo singulari conspicuo et Thesauri Fridericiani ... accedit de Thesauro supellectilis antiquarae ...

Hamburg, Piscator, 1736. 4to, pp. [12], 100, with 4 engraved plates and 2 engraved vignettes by C. Fritzsch; title-page with paper flaw at top right corner; bound in early 19th century boards. Bookplate of Edward Theodor Newell. First edition of Schlaeger's essay on an unusual coin of Alexander the Great which he hadfound in the Gotha numismatic cabinet, and on some related engraved gems. Duke Frederick III of Saxony-Gotha was so impressed with Schlaeger's essay that he appointed him curator of his numismatic collection in 1744.In the course of his work Schlaeger gives a long list of works on ancient numismatics, no doubt culled from his own very extensive library, which was supposed to be the best in Europe at the time, and which he sold to Gotha in his lifetime.Borroni 12520; Lipsius p. 353; not in Sinkankas; not in Cicognara; RLIN records only the copy at the Simthonian Institute; not in OCLC.
