[BOXLER, Lorenz]

Hohenpeissenbergs gepriesene Höhe und Epfachs merkwerthe Funde.

Schongau, privately printed for the author, 1831. 8vo, 2 parts in 1 vol., pp. [3]-31; pp. [3]-55, with 2 lithos (1 large and folding) and 1 large, folding litho table; occasionally a few light spots but a very good copy in the original grey litho printed wrappers, the author's preface litho printed from handwriting on the inside front wrapper, upper joint a little restored. First edition of a very rare, privately printed excavation report, reporting on finds made in Epfach, a village of 250 inhabitants in Bavaria, Germany. In Roman times Epfach was known as 'Abodiacum'. It was a military post guarding the important intersection of the Augsburg - Verona (North - South) and the Kempten - Salzburg (West- East) roads. It was also the only crossing of the river Lech. The Romans were in uninterrupted residence from 14 BC to 390 AD. Nothing is known about the author, other than that he was a native of Schongau, possibly working at the district court, and was a local enthusiast. The first part of his work gives a historical and topographical description of the Hohe Peissenberg, a mountain overlooking a large sway of Bavaria (illustrated with a fine 360 degree litho panorama). In the second part Boxler reports on his organised digs attempting to uncover the Roman past of Epfach. He uncovers large quantities of Roman coins, artefacts, a few vases and inscriptions. He also excavates the 260 AD wall which enclosed the Roman settlement. The wall is illustrated in a litho view. Spurned on by his finds he also investigates a few Celtic bronze age tumuli where he found some artefacts, most of which disintegrated when he tried to secure them. It is touching to note that Boxler compared his Roman spoils with illustrations found in Montfaucon. His excavations in Epfach were the earliest undertaken there.KVK lists 2 copies in Germany; not in Borroni, NUC, RLIN or OCLC.
