First edition of Worsaae's contribution to the raging controversy of the 'runes' of Runamo. The supplement answers specific criticism by professor G. Forchhammer.Finnur Magnussen of the Royal Society of Denmark spent ten months studying the inscriptions in an unknown script on a rock at Runamo (district of Blekinge) in Sweden before he published a translation in 1834. According to Magnussen the inscription consisted of five poems recording the ancient battle of Bråvalla and he attributed them to a royal bard called Starkoddr. They were acknowledged as a masterly addition to the canon of early Scandinavian literature. In 1838 Berzelius argued that these petroglyphs were nothing else but veins of quartz which ran through the stones and were thus a naturally occurring geological feature. Modern research has shown Berzelius to be correct.
