Small 4to, pp. [8], 56; title within a fine architectural woodcut border [Ferguson 248]; some light dust soiling here and there but a very good copy bound in contemporary limp vellum, a little soiled. 18th century ownership inscription of J. Boileau at end and bookplate of Michael Chasles of the French Academy of Science at front. First edition. Edward Brerewood (1565-1613), antiquary and first professor of astronomy at Gresham College, was a scholar in many fields who published nothing in his own lifetime. De Ponderibus is a treatise on the weights and values of Greek, Roman, Hebrew and Byzantines ancient coins. There are also chapters on the constitutents of the metals and alloys used in ancient coinage. Edward Brerewood's nephew who had inherited his uncle's vast library and all his manuscripts published it. The treatise was later also inserted in the apparatus of Brian Walton's Polyglot Bible (1655-57).STC 3612; Lipsius 57; Honeyman Sale 499.
