GRÜNEISEN, Carl.

Die altgriechische Bronze des Tux'schen Kabinets in Tübingen.

Stuttgart and Tubingen, Cotta, 1835. 8vo, pp. 80, with folding litho showing the bronze; a fresh and crisp copy bound in the original grey printed publisher's wrappers. Faint stamp of Donaueschingen library on title. First edition of the first description of a Greek bronze statuette of 490-480 AC which long forgotten languished unrecognised in the antiquity cabinet at Tübingen University. The bronze came to Tübingen in 1798 together with the coin and medal collection of Carl Sigmund Tux, A Stuttgart government official. The Tux bequest was considered to be of pure quality and the collection was neglected. Friedrich Thiersch on a visit from Munich, declared the bronze a Greek original in 1827 but did not publish anything on it. Grüneisen does just that in this detailed and critical study. He believed the bronze to be a chariot driver, it is now known as the 'Tübingen Hoplite Runner' and can be admired at castle Hohentübingen.Grüneisen dedicated his book to the sculptor, Johan Heinrich von Dannecker (1758-1841).Murray, Museums ..., III, 221. Borroni 2364; RLIN locates only the Yale copy; OCLC adds the Harvard copy and one in an Italian library (Catania).
