FERGUSON, James.
The Parthenon; an essay on the mode by which light was introduced into Greek and Roman temples.
London, John Murray, 1883. 4to, pp. vi, [2], 135, [1], with litho frontispiece and 4 litho plates, and 60 wood engraved illustrations in the text; a very good copy in the richly gilt publisher's pictorial burgundy cloth, top of spine a little restored. First edition, author's presentation copy with Ms. note on fly leaf dated '31 March 1883'. James Ferguson was a prolific writer on architectural and archaeological matters. This is one of his scarcer titles, and it 'influenced the construction of the glass gallery house [still housing the plant paintings of Marianne North] at Kew Gardens. Ferguson was a close friend of Heinrich Schlieman, who dedicated Tiryns to him' (Navari).Navari, Blackmer, no. 587 (note).
