Obituary of the Nuremberg natural history publisher G.N. Raspe who had died in 1785. This account of Raspe's life had originally appeared in the ninth volume of Martini's and Chemnitz's Conchylien-Cabinet in 1786. A new preface by E.J.C. Esper, the Erlangen zoology professor, and a wealth of bio-bibliographic footnotes enlarge this separate edition.G.N. Raspe (1712-1786) published more than six hundred books in his distinguished career at Nuremberg. The affectionate and detailed obituary by Chemnitz, who together with Martini was the author of Raspe's commercially very successful multi volume Conchylien-Cabinet (1769-95), draws on correspondence between the two men giving insight into the world of 18th century natural history publishing in Germany. Raspe published the German editions of Ellis's Naturgeschichte der Corallen Arten (1767) and DeGeer's Geschichte der Insekten (1778-83), both in print runs of no more than 200 copies, but made large losses on these titles which he only recouped by publishing lucrative history and law books, although his heart lay in natural history publications.
