[TAYLOR ARCHITECTURAL LIBRARY.]

Rudiments of Ancient Architecture, containing an historical account of the Five Orders ... also extracts from Vitruvius, Pliny &c. ... with a Dictionary of terms ... the fourth edition, enlarged.

London, printed for J. Taylor, Architectural Library, 1810. Large 8vo, pp. [2], xvi, 134, [2], withengraved frontispiece and 10 engraved plates, title with engraved vignette, a few wood engravings in the text; a little dust soiling here and there but a very good, uncut copy in the original publisher's boards, spine with printed paper label. Fourth edition of the immensely popular Rudiments, an introduction to architecture originally published in 1789, and constantly available from Taylor between 1789 and 1826. The RIBA catalogue suggests as the anonymous author and compiler William (the first complete translator of Vitruvius into English) and James Newton 'either working together, or the former being the original author, and the latter acting as editor for second edition [1794]. If this were the case, then one might expect the plates to be engraved by James Newton'. This copy has a Taylor's Architectural Library catalogue bound at end: A List of Books on the Various Branches of Architecture and Building ... [1814]; pp. 8, unopened and uncut; RIBA 3270.RIBA, Early Printed Books, 2873 (2871 note); Harris 765.
