Offprint. Early descriptions of engineering feats in France, England, Italy and the Americas, looking at the Thames tunnel and suspension bridges. Construction work on Brunel's Thames tunnel had started in 1825 (it was eventually opened in 1843) and his innovative tunnelling shield as well as shaft are explained and illustrated (aquatint plate). The other articles deal with Seguin's suspension bridge over the Rhone between Tain and Tournon; the first bridge which used wire cables. Further discussed are steel bridges in England and rope suspension bridges in Chile and Rio de la Plata.
