[PASTÒ, Lodovico.]

El Vin Friulario de Bagnoli Ditiramba. Seconda edizione.

Padua, con licenza dei Paroni, 1788. Large 8vo, pp. 32, with engraved vignette of Villa Bagnoli on title-page and 2 half-page engraved illustrations in the text; a very good copy printed on better paper bound in contemporary green wrappers. Second edition, but the first illustrated, of Lodovico Pastò's hymn to the Friularo wine, harvested near Bagnoli di Sopra south of Padua in the Veneto. The work is dedicated to Elisabeta Duodo, Countess Widmann in whose late Venetian Baroque palazzo, Villa Widmann, situated along the Brenta, on the way from Padua to Venice, Pastò spent many a happy week composing his poem. He also stayed in the Villa Bagnoli, illustrated in the title vignette, which belonged to the Widmann estate. Some years before him the playwright Carlo Goldoni was another guest of the Widmann's who in his Memorie (Paris 1787) praises the local Friularo wine in equal measure. The work is composed in the Venetian dialect with a helpful 2-page dictionary of Venetian and Tuscan (High Italian) words at the end. It was originally published in 1787, and was reprinted a few times in the 19th century. Bartolomeo Gamba reprinted the work in a collection entitled Collezione delle migliori opere scritte in dialetto veneziano (1817). Gamba attributed the work to Ludovico's brother Andrea, who curiously enough signed the two half-page bacchanalian engravings in the text.Simon, Vinaria, 133; Westbury, 170, B.IN.G, Catalogo del fondo italiano e latino delle opere di gastronomia, sec. XIV - XIX, vol. II, no. 1451 (1788 edition only); not in Cagle; RLIN and OCLC locate copies at Harvard, Dartmouth, Rochester and New York Public.
