First edition in English of the Apophthegmata, translated by Nicholas Udall, the ejected headmaster of Eton, and author of Ralph Roister Doister, the earliest English comedy. While the 1564 reprint is not uncommon, the first edition is rare: this and the Britwell (1924) and Stirling Maxwell (1958) copies are the only perfect copies to have appeared at auction this century.Udall also translated Erasmus’ Paraphrase upon Luke (1545) and supervised the publication of Erasmus’ New Testament Paraphrases as a whole in 1548/49.STC 10443.
