BROWNING, Elizabeth Barrett.

Casa Guidi Windows. A Poem ...

London: Chapman & Hall … 1851. 8vo., pp. vii, [1], 140, with an inserted publisher’s catalogue at the end dated 1851; a very good copy in the original blue-grey ribbed cloth, blocked in blind and lettered in gilt, spine slightly frayed at extremities and faded. First edition. This is the first of Elizabeth’s poems on Italian independence, a cause which she embraced fervently. Casa Guidi was the Brownings’ residence in Florence where she wrote the first part as an optimistic ‘Meditation in Tuscany’ in 1847-8, and the second as an account of the actual situation in 1851. Barnes A7.
