TROLLOPE, Anthony.

Is He Popenjoy? ... in three Volumes ...

London: Chapman and Hall … 1878. 3 vols., 8vo., with the half-titles; clean tear to B8 in volume I,without loss; original red-brown silk-grained cloth, blocked in black on front covers, spines gilt, endpapers of volume I renewed; spines slightly worn, covers and joints a little rubbed, but generally a very good, bright set of a novel increasingly hard to find in cloth in any condition. First edition of this late and rather dark novel, the plot hingeing upon an inheritance. The question of the legitimacy of Lord Popenjoy, heir to the Brotherton title and estates, would inevitably have reminded contemporary readers of the trial of the Tichborne claimant. Is He Popenjoy? also contains an incidental attack on feminism and the women’s rights movement. The heroine is taken to a meeting at the ‘Rights of Women Institute; established for the Relief of the Disabilities of Females’, known to all as ‘The Disabilities’. Here the heavily-moustachioed Baroness Banmann (who is obsessed with men, despite her favourite phrase, ‘de manifest infairiority of de tyrant saix’) is seen in fierce competition with the betrousered Miss Doctor Olivia Q. Fleabody. Sadleir, Trollope 49; high on his ‘B’ list of comparative scarcities, and in our experience an elusive title.
