TROLLOPE, Anthony.

The Last Chronicle of Barset ... with thirty-two Illustrations by George H. Thomas. In two Volumes ...

London: Smith, Elder and Co. … 1867. 2 vols., 8vo., with frontispiece in both volumes, and thirty illustrations; some foxing and soiling; in the original bright powder-blue sand-grained cloth, pictorially decorated in gilt; volume I joints rubbed, spine darkened and rather worn; some markings to cover of volume II; an adequate copy. First edition, first issue (in book form) of the final book in the Barsetshire series. The Last Chronicle answers the demand made in the Athenaeum three years earlier, to ‘tell us the further fortunes of the characters in The Small House at Allington’. It also contains one of the most famous murders of English literary history; Trollope himself spread the apocryphal story of how he ‘killed his old friend’ Mrs. Proudie after hearing two clergyman discussing how odious her character had become. Sadleir, Trollope 26.
