TROLLOPE, Anthony.

Mr Scarborough's Family ... in three Volumes ...

London, Chatto & Windus … 1883. 3 vols., 8vo., with the half-titles (browned), publisher’s 32-page catalogue at end of volume I; a few small tears and some soiling, mainly to volume III, pp. 148-50 stained; original smooth green-blue cloth, blocked in brown on covers and spine, lettered in gold; very slightly shaken, light damp stain to covers of volume III, otherwise a very good copy. First edition of Trollope’s forty-fifth novel, a bleak work which was halfway through its serial run in All The Year Round when Trollope died in December 1882. Rather fittingly, the focus of the novel is the ageing John Scarborough who, realising that death is imminent, struggles to decide which of his two sons deserves most to inherit his vast fortune, a choice made all the more difficult by the heartless, unworthy natures of both. Sadleir, Trollope 66.
