GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von.
Des Epimenides Erwachen. Ein Festspiel von Göthe.
Berlin, Duncker & Humblot, 1815. 8vo, pp. [4], 66, [2] advertisements; some marginal spotting, but a very good copy, uncut in contemporary plain paper wrappers. First edition, the issue with Konrad Levezow’s preface (Vorwort an die Zuschauer des Festspiels …, signed ‘K. L.’) printed separately and loosely inserted at the end (pp. xii, final page a little spotted, uncut, unbound as issued with the original paper spine). Goethe’s patriotic play, written in celebration of Germany’s victory over Napoleon, with music by Bernhard Anselm Weber, royal Kapellmeister in Berlin, was premiered on 30 March 1815. It is an allegorical piece (the source is the story of the Cretan poet and philosopher who fell asleep for over 50 years), juxtaposing conflict and destruction against man’s ability to win through by holding onto eternal moral values.Goedeke IV, 3, 408; Hagen 393b; Wilpert/Gühring 98.
