The first appearance in English of Pervaia liubov’ (1860), ‘one of the great short stories in all literature’ (Terras), with a long biographical introduction of over 50 pages. The translator was acquainted with Turgenev through his father, the journalist Blanchard Jerrold, who had met the Russian in Paris. Sidney requested permission to prepare some translations in 1878, and Turgenev responded enthusiastically, stating that he had such confidence in Jerrold’s Russian that he had no need to see any proofs. He also supplied the signed photograph that is used here as a frontispiece.Punin i Baburin (1874), an autobiographical story, appears here in the second English translation. The first, by George W. Scott, appeared in New York in 1882.
