Sm. 8vo, pp. [iv], 302 + advertisement leaf; avery good clean copy in German contemporary half sheep gilt over pebbled cloth boards, marbled edges; spine worn, hinges cracked; with the small stamp on title of the publisher Carl Vietor; in a folding cloth box. First edition of Büchner’s posthumous papers, published by his younger brother Ludwig with a long biographical introduction. It contains the first appearance in book form of the comedy Leonce und Lena and the novella Lenz, and of letters to Büchner’s family and to his fiancée Minna Jaeglé. Of all Büchner’s works only Danton’s Tod (1835, printed here in second edition) was published before his death from typhoid at the age of 24. Woyzeck remained undiscovered until it was published by K. E. Franzos in 1879.Wilpert/Gühring 6.
