The plot revolves around the (ultimately successful) efforts to relieve the chronic constipation of Sirop-au-cul, King of Merdenchine. The author, Charles-François Racot de Grandval (1710–1784), was born into a family of actors and established himself as one of the finest of his day.II. First edition. One of the classics of the poissard genre, this one-act play centres on the rivalry between two suitors for the hand of Suzon, daughter of the fishwife Madame Engueule.III. One of several editions of this scatalogical tragicomedy. The order of editions remains unclear. This work, which has also been attributed to Nicolas Racot de Grandval, father of Charles-François, is preceded by an ‘Epitre dédicatoire à l’ombre de Molière’.IV. Second edition, preceded (according to Barbier) by an undated edition of 35 pages. This work is an ingenious critique, in the form of a parody, of the often forced plots of contemporary tragedy.I.
