ROSTOPCHINA, Evdokiia Petrovna.

Vozvrat Chatskogo v Moskvu, prodolzhenie komedii Griboedova: Gore ot uma ... (napisano v 1856 godu). Izdanie N. K. Flige [Chatsky's return to Moscow, a continuation of Griboedov's comedy Woe from wit ... (written in 1856). Edited by N. K. Flige].

St Petersburg, “Obshchestvennaia Pol’za”, 1865. Small 8vo, pp. 140; a very good, fresh copy in publisher’s original blue cloth decorated in gilt and blind, gilt edges; some light wear to edges of covers and head and tail of spine, old inscription to front paste-down, bookseller’s stamp to rear paste-down. First edition, published posthumously, of Countess Rostopchina’s sequel to Woe from Wit, which had been read by Griboedov to ‘all Moscow’ and ‘all Petersburg’ in 1825. The present play, a ‘conversation in verse’ in thirteen scenes, is subtitled ‘A meeting with a familiar face after 25 years separation’ and, set in 1850, reanimates Griboedov’s famous characters – Chatsky, Sofia Pavlovna, Famusov, Skalozub; it is written in imitation of Griboedov’s stylised rhyming verse.Rostopchina (1811–1858) was a society hostess and poet, whose salon included Gogol, Pushkin and Turgenev. Her ballad Nasil’nyi brak [Forced Marriage] (1845), about Russia’s relationship to Poland, had angered Nicholas I, and she was barred from St Petersburg, living in Moscow until the Tsar’s death. In later life, her increasingly trenchant satire on contemporary literary vogues brought her isolation, and she died almost forgotten in 1858.Smirnov-Sokol’skii 1078. Not in Kilgour. OCLC shows UC Berkeley only. There are also copies at the British Library, National Library of Russia, and Staatsbibliothek Berlin.
