First edition of Ulybyshev’s important early biography and study of Mozart, which was translated into Russian by Modest Tchaikovsky (brother of the composer) in 1890-92. A Decembrist, and a member with Pushkin of the literary and political society ‘The Green Lamp’ in St Petersburg, 1819-20, Ulybyshev is also the author of a work on Beethoven (1857), and a social Utopian novel, Son (A Dream), 1819, which ‘depicted a Russia of the future with no priests, monks, standing army, or despotism, but a thriving economy and a good system of justice and welfare’ (Terras).
