HERBERT, Zbigniew.
Struna ?wiat?a.
[Warsaw], Czytelnik, [1956]. Sm. 8vo, pp. 84; light browning to paper and faint water stain to lower margin at end, but generally in good condition in the original colour illustrated wrappers, slightly soiled and dusty. Rare first edition of the influential Polish poet, playwright and essayist’s first book, a collection of 40 poems under the title String of light. It was printed in an edition of 1205 copies. Herbert had published a few poems in reviews from the late 1940s, but because of the political situation in Poland he wrote mainly ‘for the desk drawer’, and it was only with the beginning of the Thaw in politics and culture in 1956 that he was able to publish his first collection at the age of 32. Two more volumes followed in 1957 and 1961 which brought him international recognition.
