Geneva and New York [Jersey, Imprimerie universelle = Brussels, Henri Samuel].Two works in one vo First edition of Hugo’s most important political volume published in exile in Jersey; bound with the unexpurgated first edition (published at the same time as the censored text) of his political poems written in reaction to the 1851 coup d’état. The false imprint, and indeed the spurious colophon (‘Imprimerie universelle, Saint-Helier, Dorset Street, 19’), were designed to divert the censor’s attention. The work had significant underground success in France and went through many subsequent printings. This is a copy of the second issue, on slightly thicker, untinted paper.The dedicatee has not been identified. Hugo lived at Marine Terrace at the Grève d’Azette during his exile in Jersey 1852-5.Carteret I, 415.
