BROD, Max.
Franz Kafka. Eine Biographie (Erinnerungen und Dokumente).
Prague, Mercy, 1937. 8vo, pp. 287, with 8 illustrations; a very good copy in the original cloth, some light wear; in a folding cloth box. First edition of Max Brod's famous biography of Kafka, with a signed presentation inscription on title-page: ‘Für Rudolf und Grethe Thomas in alter Freundschaft, Max Brod, Nov. 1937’.Rudolf Thomas (1895-1938) was a journalist on the Prager Tagblatt, who knew both Kafka and Brod. He was one of the few critics to give a positive review to Ein Landarzt (in the Prager Tagblatt, 31 October 1920) and was an enthusiastic advocate of Kafka’s books. The present volume was subsequently in the collection of the East German Kafka scholar Klaus Hermsdorf (1929-2006). Kafka famously bequeathed his unpublished papers to his friend Max Brod, with instructions to burn everything. Brod decided to go against Kafka’s wishes and to publish the literary remains – Kafka’s three major novels were all published by Brod in the years immediately following his death in 1924: Der Prozess in 1925, Das Schloss in 1926, and Amerika (now known as Der Verschollene) in 1927, as were many of his short stories.Raabe 45. 51; Wilpert/Gühring 80.
