MANDELSHTAM, Osip Emilievich.

Tristia.

Printed in Berlin, published St. Petersburg/Berlin, [Petropolis], 1922. Sm. 8vo, pp. 75, [5], edition designed by M. V. Dobuzhinskii; a fine copy in the original illustrated wrappers decorated to a Futurist interpretation of a classical design by Dobuzhinskii; covers a little darkened and rubbed, but generally very fresh; in a folding cloth box. First edition. The second of the three books of poetry published by Mandelshtam during his lifetime. It marked the beginning of his maturity as a poet and the peak of his involvement with Acmeism. The book was compiled, almost at random, from a pile of rough drafts submitted to the publisher Petropolis. For a full account see Nadezhda Mandelshtam, Hope against hope, 1971, p. 269. Its success was immediate, and by the time the second version was printed in Moscow the following year under a new title, Second Book, Mandelshtam was already a poet of considerable and widespread fame. The original title was attached to the collection by the poet Kuzmin, and reflects the author’s yearning for St Petersburg just as Ovid’s Tristia is a reflection of his yearning for Rome from the Black Sea.Hellyer 759; Kilgour 698; Tarasenkov p. 225.
