First edition of Hofmannsthal’s morality play Jedermann (Everyman), based on the traditional religious parable of the rich man who is unexpectedly faced with death, and for the first time gives thought to the salvation of his soul.Hofmannsthal wrote the play for the opening of the first Salzburg festival in 1920, when it was directed by Max Reinhardt. With the exception of a break between 1938 and 1945, when it was banned on political gounds, it has been performed there annually in the Cathedral square from 1926 until the present day.Wilpert/Gühring 49.
