SCHMIDT, Friedrich Wilhelm August (von Werneuchen).
Gedichte.
Berlin, bey C. Spener, 1795. 16mo (110 x 70 mm), pp. IV, 160 (recte 252), with engraved title, 11 engraved plates by Bolt, Geyser, Guttenberg and Henne after Chodowiecki, 4 engraved landscapes by Veith after Lütke, and 2 folding leaves of music by Reichardt; a very good copy in German contemporary half sheep, spine ruled gilt in compartments, boards slightly rubbed. First edition; the rare, illustrated first issue. Another issue appeared the same year under the title LX Gedichte without the illustrations: OCLC cites 3 copies in German libraries of the second issue, but none of the first. In 1797 a collection with apparently the same illustrations was published as Gedichte… mit Kupfern und Musik.Schmidt, a Prussian pastor in the Lutheran church, wrote idyllic, pastoral poems, which aroused Goethe’s mockery in his poem ‘Musen und Grazien in der Mark’ (1796). Goethe later treated him more leniently in Maximen und Reflexionen (972). The charming illustrations in this edition by Chodowiecki take up the idyllic pastoral theme.
